Late Night Post

After my bike ride, a bunch of folks met Delynn and I down at the Soiled Dove to see Melanie Susuras play. It's been clear since I saw her play the first time that she has an astounding voice and song writing skills to match. But this is the first time her voice was matched by a band worthy of it. Strong words, but these guys brought the house down.

It started with the rhythm section. David Derby was tight, precise, and on fire. So much so that I won't deduct points for the Duke cap he was wearing. Tony T looked like he had a hard day, unshaven and a bit haggard. He didn't play like it, though. With Derby in control, Tony ran the bass like a finely tuned machine. Eddie Garcia was there at every turn on lead guitar, and the trio urged the most out of every song. Melanie, out front, was phenomenal, and her voice led the way. Apart from Delynn screaming for "more cowbell", (thanks for the link Buzz!) it was the best show, bar none, that I have seen in a long while.

DIGITAL CITY, 2004

These days, Lilith Fair may be just another chapter in rock history, but Denver still reaps the benefits from the women's rock festival, as its "discoveries" are still rocking the Mile High Scene. One of two women to be recognized as a local up and comer at the final Lilith Fair, in 1999, Melanie Susuras has since become a staple in the Denver music community. Built around her acoustic guitar work and her powerful voice -- comparisons to the Indigo Girls or Susan Tedeschi aren't at all out of line -- Susuras' songs fit nicely within the mold crafted by the Lilith Fair. Susuras doesn't rely upon the femme-rock catalog, however, as her heartfelt lyrics and her band's handle on low-key chops make her a songwriter who's got enough of her own ideas (and more than enough of her own talent to boot) to be an act that doesn't need the life-support of a built-in Lilith scene to survive. -- Matt Schild

EPINIONS, 2003
The Bottom Line

Melanie and her band took the stage and put on a rather enjoyable set of acoustically tinged folk rock. Rather than using drums, drummer David Derby kept the rhythm with congas, which I felt was a nice touch. Guitarist Eddie Garcia played a very clean electric guitar, alternately keeping rhythm with Melanie's acoustic, and breaking into wonderful, riveting solo's. Bassist Tony Thompson was steady throughout, getting downright funky when needed.

As I watched, I kept thinking that MSB would do well playing ski towns

Who’s Making Noise

Melanie Susuras Band

Summer might be cooling down, but the future of this band is definitely not! With the cool, powerful, sultry voice of Susuras delivering impassioned lyrics, David Derby on the drums and percussion, and Chris Childress on Lead Guitar and Jon Burquest on Bass Guitar, MSB is unquestionably hot! If your summer plans have not included a night out on the town its time to get out and enjoy some musical heat. Tempt yourself by getting on-line at www.msbmusic.com, and check out the sample of newest release MSB: Lilt Live 2003 that was recorded live in July at the 2nd Annual Lilt Festival. The complete live recording is now available on the bands Web site, as well as at upcoming performances: Sept.3rd at the University of WY, Sept. 7th at Mishawaka Theater in Fort Collins, Sept. 15th at Paco’s in Idaho Springs, or Sept. 17th at Miners Alley Playhouse in Golden. MSB will be recording their second studio album this fall. In May Rock On Colorado, www.rockoncolorado.com, named MSB as one of the Top Five Acoustic Rock bands, and selected Susuras as one of the five favorite front girls -this band might just be too hot for even Maris the Great to devour!

Talent Search Stories - Denver
by Carolyn Snell, 1999
Lilith Fair featuring Sarah Mclachlan, Sheryl Crow

In downtown Denver, on the hip Market Street, lies The Soiled Dove, one of the area's premiere singer/songwriter clubs. Although it showcases mainly rock acts, by the looks of the flashy "Soiled Dove" sign and brick walls, you would think you would hear some jazz or possibly even a comedian. Nevertheless, this was a perfect place for a full house to view the finalists of the Denver Talent Search.

The diversity of the evening's performers was especially apparent in grand prize winner Melanie Susuras' (whose grandmother was in the crowd) strong vocal performance reminded me of Martina McBride.

There’s a reason she’s risen to the head of her genre.
